The seas roar
and the nations tremble.
Yet the thunder of the ocean
is only a sigh to God,
so we clamor
louder and
LOUDER
to outshout the
waves as they crash
and the earth as it rumbles,
to bang and blare and bluster above
the bare whisper that is God.
Who can stand to hear
God’s silence
when we
have no ears
to understand the
pounding praise of the ocean
in all of its swelling power and turmoil?
The clapping of floods, the howling of storms,
these are a nightmare not a lullaby for
us who build a Tower of Babel
so that our souls can sleep
soundly within our own
restless bedlam
rather
than making
peace with earth’s
joyous cacophony or worse:
peace with the eternal hush of God.
