I sit
and open my arms
wide.
Left. Right.
Outstretched.
Heart exposed.

Deep breath.

I am more comfortable
curled up, arms pulled in, hands together.
My biceps resent this open pose, this elongation,
which I think is not so much about
physical fitness but
soul exposure.

Here we go.

Most Wild & Holy God,
let me hold no idol in my arms
nor close to my chest
lest I fail to welcome the wholly Unexpected:
the Alarm of Insight,
the Impossible Dance,
the ever-provocative Spirit.
Let me not be afraid
(arms wide, breathe deeply)
of the wilderness
that awaits.

I invite you to join me in writing prayers for the season of Lent. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 13, I will write & post daily prayers here on “Faith and Water,” and I will email prompts for prayer-writing to all who would like to join me in this Lenten discipline. Simply send your email address through the contact page, and watch for your first prompt via email on February 13.
