“When Jesus saw Mary the sister of Lazarus weeping, and he saw those who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved.” (John 11:33)

A simple prompt for your prayers today: to name and lift up for God’s comfort those who are weeping.

For the one whose tears dry without crying
because there is too much coping required
to expend her energy needlessly on tears.

For the one who does cry, and rage and fight
and protest and struggle against the constant
devouring of her life by one saying “I love you.”

For the ones weeping over death and loss:
brothers and comrades shot inexplicably,
a daughter missing for days with no trace.

For the ones who weep in grateful pride
over growing grandchildren and children,
who cry to see distant family and friends.

For the mourning tears of Mary and Martha,
for Jesus who wept to see their heartache.
May God appear wherever there are tears.
