Check-in

How is your joy, God?
Have you laughed long & hard today;
have you taken time to pause with delight?
In your heart, do you overflow with adoration
for the baby elephant playing with birds and
the child protesting gun prevalence?
As you tend the cracked & bleeding feet
of those who are fleeing violence and
those running from themselves,
do you also notice the daffodil
blooming along the path?
Is your mirth as public as
your tears, or have we failed
to give you space & affirmation to do both?
Has rage completely overtaken you
(if not depression), or
do you still enjoy listening to the stars’ song
in the wee hours while painting
the sunrise with a new set of brushes?
Are you still pleased
with the shades of pink you chose for the flamingo,
and do you cheer every spring when the crocus
dares to bloom before the snow is gone?
It makes all the difference
if you are holding onto joy, God.

Remember

Humility.

Remember the dusty Holiness of humanity that has no need to accumulate treasures.

Peace.

Remember the simplicity of Peace that welcomes grace and returns the same tenfold.

Sorrow.

Remember the certainty of the Wilderness and patiently walk with someone there.

Mystery.

Remember the possibilities on the very edge of Mystery that allude to a new day.

Joy.

Remember the relentlessness of Joy that wonders at love and marvels at life.

on Psalm 22:27a and Mark 8:35

Christmas Day

Hark! the messenger angels sing.
It is finished! Love has come!

Our spirits soar, O mighty God,
at the magnitude and majesty:

there you are among us, the Infant Savior — and
here you are among us, the Wonderful Mystery!

We are bursting with the news: Love is here!
Peace is here! Justice and judgment are here!

How sweet, how delicious, how very
indescribable — you are sublime!

Receive our joy and make of it wonder.

Receive our gratitude and make of it humility.

Receive our adoration and make of it compassion.

Make of us, O Jesus, vessels of praise
and testimonies of the miraculous

so that no one doubts and no one
does not know the breadth of your love.

Glory, glory, glory to you in our hearts!
Glory, glory, glory to you in heaven & earth!

Glory and good news for all people!
Good news and great relief for those most in need.

Hark! the messenger angels sing.
It is finished! Love has come!

Amen! Your love is complete!
Amen! Our work of love is renewed

and our life in love is saved.
Glory, pure glory to God in the highest!

Your love is forever and ever.
Amen and amen.

Advent: My Light and My Salvation

the LORD is my light

o God my God, what I wouldn’t give to see your warmth and light on long sleepless nights when only the winter cold keeps me company. yet you greet me faithfully in every dawn, you meet my eyes as though we haven’t spent a single moment apart, you delight my heart and immediately all is forgiven. basking in your presence, I could journey on forever.

the LORD is my salvation

take, I pray, this well-intentioned if wayward spirit, this limited and weary flesh, this most flighty heart, and unburden them to love and serve you gladly. do not let my faith fade at sunset — save me from my fickle self and preserve my joy at every hour, through every strain, against every demon. you are my strength and my song; by no other force can I stand, for no other reason do I sing.
