Psalm 137

Heartbroken
to sing the chorus
once so familiar
now forgotten,
foreign,
forced from the tongue across the lips
as though without understanding
and indeed
I no longer understand
what I used to love
but still I carry on
because they expect this song
this dance
this act
of joy
to reassure them
that all is right in the world
that they don’t need to worry
about me
Just sit
and listen
Accept my pretense
Turn away
from my tears
Let the melody
make you forget
May we both
forget
