Remember, O God.

Let not your ear be disconnected from your heart,
your eye disassociated from your memory.

Listen. Look.
Remember.

Ask yourself, Most Holy One —
where have you witnessed
pain and hopelessness before?

Do your eyes remember seeing
the backs bent by the struggle to survive,
the plumes of smoke erupting from a raging world?

Do your ears recall hearing
the sound of wailing in the streets,
the silence of sobbing behind closed doors?

Do you remember what you said in bygone times:
“Do not be afraid. I am; I am here.”

If you are unmoved by tears and prayers
and hearts crying in desolation,
then let your heart be triggered by holy memories
of days when you divided seas and
leveled empires and restored people to joy.

Hear, O God,
listen and remember.
For your sake and for ours.
