Just one step
toward the water
and another
toward an impossibility
Two steps then
a sidestep of hesitation
and now
we’re dancing:
approaching and turning
trusting and waiting
dreaming and fearing
slow-quick-quick
a rumba with God
between a rock and a hard place
‘twixt Egypt and the Red Sea
doubt and deliverance
Just one step,
my God,
then another
toward your impossibility
Your prayer reminds me of the Hebrew legend of Nachshone (sp) who was at the front of the Hebrews as they approached the sea. When the command to “go forward” was given, no one wanted to take the risk of drowning. Then Nachshone took one step into the sea and the waters parted, but only for that one step. He had to continue to “go forward” and with each step the waters divided one more step’s worth.
Yes, Jim!
