If you must, O Spirit,
drive me into the wilderness
but do not abandon me there.
If you pursue me then at least I know
you are somewhere near me; if
you leave me alone there,
my spirit will fail.
Hound and chase me
and I will remain restless;
abandon me and I will set down
weary roots where they cannot thrive,
I will drink the sand for lack of living water
until my dry throat sings its praises
of the desolation and forgets
the joy of your wild ways.
