Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my fears to keep.
I ask my God: these burdens, take;
And while I sleep, new dreams to make.
Be my peace and be my breath;
In every fiber, let me rest.
Chase the doubts that haunt my night,
Bring mercies new in morning light.
I love this version. Much better than the traditional one (which I will try to avoid teaching Jack — don't need him to worry about dying in the middle of the night!)
I will start using this! Thank you for sharing!
I like this prayer. As someone whose anxiety often kicks in at bedtime I appreciate the way it acknowledges those fears and anxiety.
Thanks, Wendy!
Beth, I keep returning to this prayer to find peace at bedtime. Glad you like it too.
Rachel,
You are so gifted. This is beautiful! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thank you, Kathi. This prayer continues to be one of my favorites!
Thank you, I’ll use and share
This version was on a card received when my oldest joined our family:
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray The Lord my soul to keep
May angels watch me through the night
And wake me with the morning light.
I remember learning this version (along with the “if I die before I wake” version) as a child, Tracy!
