Memorial Sunday Prayer

Most High God, Everlasting Light, Steadfast Love:
from the limits of our worlds & spirits & spaces,
we pray with humility, “Remember us.”

Remember us when we face hurdles & set-backs,
when disease & death knock at our doors,
when hell & high water surround us,
when despair seems our only friend.
Remember us and bolster our faith
for there is no power, no circumstance
that can separate us from you.

Remember us when war & rumors of war
cause our spirits to flee for the hills
cause wisdom to bury its head in the sand
cause ideological disputes between neighbors.
Remember your peace though we forget it;
we have not yet valued the lives on the front lines
the lives crossing borders of seas & walls
the lives even of our loved ones
enough to reject thoroughly from our own lives
the perpetuation of violence and its devices.

Remember us when, despite our sin, we praise you
with imprecise words and faltering tongues but
hearts overflowing with gratitude and awe.
Remember us as we remember
that yours alone is the glory
yours alone the work & the rest
yours alone the love & the splendor,
yours alone the praise of the heavens.
There is no one, no thing, no god like you.

In your mercy, remember us.
In your love, shape us.
In your grace, keep us
this day and always.

Amen.

God(ot)

I waited for you today,
found a quiet place to
sit in peaceful wonder.
I watched the world
while waiting and oh!
how beautiful the world
because you are in it:
the starling is a black
jewel in the sunlight,
the street a circus of
sound & light & people,
the morning warmth
an invitation to smile.
So I do smile as I wait
…but you do not come.
It’s not the first time —
in fact, it’s been a long
too long a time since
you last joined me here.
I remember the last time
we found each other; that
memory alone brings me
back to wait again for you.
But long too long it seems
and longer again each day
until the starling appears
less a jewel than a nuisance
the street a clamor & chaos
the warmth a stifling heat.
My return tomorrow is in
question; more certain the
likelihood that you will not.
Perhaps another time.

Pentecost Sunday

Ah LORD God:
how is it that you give
all good gifts?
With an open hand and a spirit of grace
you give,
and in gratitude we receive you.

Dear Sweet Spirit:
how is it that we each hear you
whispering our names?
With an uninhibited holiness and a prophetic heart
you whisper,
and in gratitude we hear you & understand.

Ah Blessed Jesus:
how is it that you promise
peace beyond understanding?
With the power of God and the indwelling of the Spirit
you pour out,
and in humility we overflow with serenity & solidarity.

Most Holy God,
how is it that you gather us
from the east & the west, from the north & the south?
With love and a vision for the Kin-dom
you call us together,
and in joy we come.

Let it be so.
